Then I said, hey, I know fanfiction written by gay and trans dudes. But then I remembered, wait, I think I know one writer who just must be cis het based on his work. T'Pring finds out and she just stands there for a couple of minutes then:

Chapel: *confused*
Laan: *confused because she distantly remembers that being the name of a Mutineer*
Spock: WHAT!!!?!!!!!
Pike: *panicking, desperately trying to find an exit, falls on floor, has heart attack*

Jim Kirk is valid for having an on again of again complicated relationship with Carol Marcus. Spock is valid for being upset at Chapel for not committing to their relationship like he thought he could. Chapel is valid for pursuing her dreams despite her affections for Spock. Chris and Batel are valid for having a relationship that complicates their work life. Sam Kirk is valid for pursuing knowledge on the flagship enterprise despite not being able to see his family. La'an is valid to have her whirlwind romance with an alt!Kirk and have that color her impression of canon!Kirk. Uhura is valid for being an uncertain all business ensign learning to believe in herself and inspire others. M'Benga is valid for not wanting to be a bunny.
They are all valid.
And Una and Erica are valid for just being their awesome selves and mostly chilling through this really strange new world happening to ALL of them.

do you all remember in the early 2010s where people were talking about freeing the nipple and that mixed-gender sports should become a thing and the removal of period tax and all of that and then some people realised that would mean trans people too ans they instantly decided to revert to bioessentialism 101 and now i have to see grating sentences like Well maybe jeopardy should be gender-segregated because males have a biological advantage in pressing a button
